So with the tiebreaker over, I'm now free to reveal that I was Thunder of Kawahagi Middle School, and that (A) my teammates were awesome!!! (B) my fics weren't so bad either *lol* self-pride AND (C) this was tremendous fun!!! ♥♥♥ Would do it again in a heartbeat. ^_^

Congrats to Ichigaya and good luck to both teams in the final round! ♥

Now on to Sherlock Big Bang... @_@
lanerose: (Default)
For anyone who's missed the competition, although I think most of the people who would be interested on my f-list are also participating, I'm taking party in DW's Hikago Deathmatch. Round one works can be found here. I... will avoid commenting on the fics for the moment. ^.^;;;

Also, took the bar exam. Really freaking hope that I passed. Because not passing would suck. The two questions I remembered because I had no idea WTF they were asking (one for each day, which is clearly a great record, lol, and I really did write WTF?! next to the one on Wednesday), I later managed to determine that I got right through dumb luck, so hey, good sign! But I also completely missed half an essay question and am pretty sure I screwed up the MPT, so hey, who knows? Results aren't out until November, so I've decided not to worry about it in the mean time. Have had a wicked headache all day, too. When I got on the train last night to head home, I'm pretty sure the conductor thought that I had been drinking or doing drugs or something because he told me to "get home safe." Which just isn't something one says to a person on a rush hour train in NY. Such is my life. @_@ But it made me laugh, so hey, win for him. ^_^

Anyway, I'm on vacation for the first time in forever until I start work in October. Fic will probably get written, although I'm working on an original thing, too, so we'll see which wins. I'm also planning to travel a bit - haven't decided on a destination yet, though, so if anyone's got a recommendation, do let me know! Tentatively eyeing the U.K. - maybe do a run through the major cities in each country? I like the idea of doing Wales and Scotland since I've never been, and of doing England at a time of year when I'm not freezing to death. May pop over to Ireland. Alternatively, I've been looking at doing a cruise, either from Barcelona and seeing most of Italy, or from Vancouver and seeing Alaska. If anyone has actually done any of these things and has a recommendation, that would be kind of awesome.

Nice to see you all again! ♥
lanerose: (Mine!  ^_^)

Since I'm such a tremendous slacker at updating this journal, I figure I might do this as a way to get myself back into the habit.  That being said, the first day's challenge was to rec three pieces of your own fan work - your favorites or works that otherwise define you or whatever.  So here are my three:

First, I recommend Moogle Madness.  Moogle Madness is a Final Fantasy X Tidus/Yuna fic.  It is a comedic little piece about a canon het couple - in other words, right in one of my favourite spots to write.  It was written for a challenge, which a lot of my fic is, and takes something perfectly ordinary from canon (Lulu's moogle) and expands it in a creative way.  I love the Final Fantasy series, so it would be weird not to include at least one Final Fantasy fic on this list.  Also, it still makes me smile.

Next, I recommend Some Rest.  Some Rest is a Fullmetal Alchemist fic based on a single frame of the second opening (original version of the anime, pls thx).  I wrote Some Rest for [livejournal.com profile] ladylore during exams period in undergraduate a bajillion years ago.  By which I mean seven.  I'm reasonably sure that I wrote it in her and [livejournal.com profile] dyxlisa's room while curled up on their purple people-eating futon with a hot chocolate and gummi candies at my side and the Plot Puppy gallivanting about nearby while [livejournal.com profile] dyxlisa and [livejournal.com profile] ladylore worked on art and stories.  As much fun as writing fic is alone, having company to do so always made it even better, and I think this is one of the best fics that got written that way.  Also gen, which makes me happy.

Lastly, I recommend Amputation.  Amputation is a Hunter x Hunter fic featuring Gon and Killua, with a side of Illumi and others.  It is also maybe my favourite thing that I've ever written.  It's a traveling story - one that I wrote while on the road and without consistent access to the internet.  Unsurprisingly, those stories seem to be my better ones.  It does something I've always liked doing, in that it makes the reader think one thing at the beginning, which is gradually explained and unwrapped as it goes.  I think I did pretty well with the character voices, too, which always makes me happy, and it's a gen fic, which makes me really happy.  It's my first long one-shot and maybe the first time that I really understood how to write a good one-shot.  Also, I love that the manga has headed in a somewhat similar direction of late.  And really, I just like this fic.

So that's day one.  Can't wait to see what day 2 brings us.  =)
lanerose: (Default)
But then, I never was very good at posting consistently in the first place. Still, over three months is a bit long even for me. In my defense, I'm a 2L now, which means I spent all of August and September (successfully, thank goodness!) job hunting. I'm also currently in two moot court competitions, working on my student note, and taking classes, so my time is like negative until the end of January. On the plus side, I get to travel and see fun places, and I've been having a really excellent time of it. Anyways, suffice to say that Nano will almost certainly not be happening this year, and fic (except maybe Yuletide, and possibly something to celebrate my 10th(!!!) anniversary writing fics next month) is probably not happening any time soon. Still love you all, though, and miss you even if I don't post much.

Blind Go is also over again, and I was shoyu. This piece was written the night before a final exam and two days before a moot court competition - in other words, time was insanely short and frankly, I was proud something existed. I feel like I cheated a bit because it's *about* Sai, but it means that I still haven't actually *written* Sai. I do like the sort of quiet dignity that it's rocking, though, especially since my last take on Hikaru and Akira with a go board was seriously crack-a-licious.

And that's about it. =D

Well~

There's rather a lot that needs to be said, because a ton has happened since I last updated my journal. However, if I ignore my brief for any longer, I *dread* the outcome I'll see when I turn it in. So this is just a cross link to my [livejournal.com profile] yaoi_challenge fic, which is an xXxholic Doumeki/Watanuki story that can be read here. Yay, first fic of the year! ^.^;;;
lanerose: (KHR ~Hibaribird)
Wait, it's fic and it's not for a challenge? Really? O_o

This reminds me, of course, that I have a few things (Yuletide, Tutu-athon) that need to be cross-posted still. And of course, me updating more than once a millenia might be a good idea. I'd blame school, but in truth I've been on break for the better part of a month, and I did a whole lot of nothing during that time. (In my defense, OMFG school was so much busier than I remember it being since, like, high school.) Also, it's likely to continue to be pretty bad for the next, oh, two and a half years. XDD So I might not be writing as much, though I think being super!crazy!busy this coming semester might actually have the side effect of making me be more organized and therefore writing more. I'm also working on an original thing (if any of y'all remember my Nano from '08, it's a re-spin of that from a different character's perspective and starting at a different point, which makes it work a lot better) so who knows what there'll be in fandom any time soon. Also, if anyone is willing to be on a filter to take a quick peek at what I've got of the new version of the original thing, I may have to love you forever. So let me know.

... wow, this post is getting rambly and I'm not sure it all follows. I'd say I'm going to quit while I'm ahead, but in truth I need to talk about the fic a little before I link it.

So, I've been toying with this since pretty much the start of the TYL arc. It's gotten a little joss'd, but I got so close to finishing it before it got joss'd (which happened a good twenty chapters ago, now, because I really was that atrociously slow at writing this XD) that when I found it again I wanted to brush it off and polish it up for show. So whatever. It's here! And I like it!!! So =P. (I swear, the fic is more coherent than this post. Seriously. Seriously!!!)

Also, Ohayocon!!! in two-ish weeks. Anyone else going?? Seriously stoked to see [livejournal.com profile] dyxlisa and [livejournal.com profile] nekomoogle!!! =D

When the wind is southerly, I know a hawk from a handsaw. ♥

So... saw Hamlet this week!!! ♥♥♥ I'd heard pretty mixed opinions of Jude Law's performance, but I was super pleasantly surprised to find I enjoyed it!! Well, okay, aside from a technical issue here and there (how do you mispronounce contumely and call yourself a Broadway-level actor? Seriously. -_-;;), but that's not terribly surprising, given that I once had the entire script memorized and am therefore more particular about the little details than most. I liked it just on general principle, I suppose, because I always love Hamlet, and the staging for this performance was really superlative. Neat interplay with light and shadow, and I loved the costume effect with characters being barefoot when they were meant to be taken as insane. (Why is it always the tiny details that get me?) More than that, though, it made me reconsider the meaning of Hamlet's line in Act V about the wind being northerly, to take it almost as an indication not that Hamlet *is* mad, but rather that the murders he's committed are slowly *driving* him mad, which was an interpretation I hadn't looked at yet. Any production that can make me reconsider a scene gets mad props from me. ^___^

In other, rather delayed, news, [livejournal.com profile] blind_go is over again! This time I was Kitagawa, and I wrote A Change of Channels. I was... uh... pretty much bowled over, I guess, by how well received it was. ^^;; I'm still really bothered by the title, though. XDD (I kept wanting to call it Changing Channels, but since I didn't try to hide my style *at all*, I thought I needed to make at least a cursory attempt, and well... yeah. *cough* Not that I'm not overly sensitive about this.) Anyways, Yongha again. One of these days I *will* write something without him or Hikaru in it. Maybe. ... ...but probably not.

And... I've been offline most of this week, in spite of not being at school, because no sooner did I go on break than my laptop crashed. My little brother's trying to resuscitate it now (it's been down for a week), but if he fails I'll be completely without access until the replacement for my darling six year old finally arrives. This is what I get for not replacing it before the school year started, I suppose. ^^;;; Ah well. It'll be good. ^___^

Hi all~!

So, I haven't actually posted in a little bit, and now seemed like a good time to do so. ^_^;;; Lots of things have happened since the last time I posted (LSATs and fics and all sorts of things). Starting with [livejournal.com profile] trail_hunter! [livejournal.com profile] trail_hunter was a lot of fun! Produced both quantity and quality Hunter x Hunter fic, which really was something I'd almost given up on seeing all at one time. Three cheers to my co-mods, [livejournal.com profile] readerofasaph and [livejournal.com profile] giving_ground, for being awesome~! I'm going to be sending out the prizes tomorrow. ^_^ I wrote this rather strange fic about Hisoka. I'm not really sure where it came from, I was just kind of in a mood from being stuck in freaking Chicago, and then Kurapika wouldn't talk to me, and Gon was having issues, and suddenly there was creepy Hisoka fic. O_o Oh well. I like it, after a fashion. Not the worst thing I've ever written, anyways.

Other recent fic! For [livejournal.com profile] fifthmus, I wrote Affecting Eternity: Ponnuki for [livejournal.com profile] thephoenixboy. It's about Ogata becoming Touya Kouyo's student. And it's kind of a fusion with Prince of Tennis, except not really, because none of the Prince of Tennis characters make an appearance. I feel a bit bad about it - I wanted Ogata to have something that he was passionate about prior to go, on the theory that he was super passionate about go because go was his second chance and he didn't expect a third. So then I was thinking about it, and I... was being a little lazy, and didn't want to come up with a team of my own, so I tried to figure out who to borrow. I know soccer and tennis, and it occurred to me that either Whistle! or Tenipuri would work, doubly so because I know Phoenix knows both. ^_^;;; And then it was mostly chance. I was in a tennis mood. XDD It got away from me a bit, so I may pick it back up again because it feels like it might need a part two to be complete. I dunno~. Figure it out soon enough.

I also received this really fabulous fic about Akira doing archery from [livejournal.com profile] aithine! Definitely made my Fifthmus~~! ♥

And [livejournal.com profile] blind_go fic~. I need to remember to post about it in something resembling a decent amount of time after this round ends. Anyone who can guess me gets a drabble (strict 100 word limit so no complicated requests please!) from any fandom of mine that they'd like. Comments on this post screened to allow guessing. ^_^

At the moment, I'm working on [livejournal.com profile] khr_undercover fic~. I really like my idea for it. ♥ Also toying with a potentially rather long Skip Beat! fic. I hesitate to do long!fic, but... it's a good idea, and I kind of want to write it. But then I had this other idea, too, for an quasi-original screenplay, and I sort of want to work on that, too. And really, I need to finish my law school apps before anything else, but I'm in a writing sort of mood (maybe because I'm not stressing over huge scary exams any more?) so I dunno. *ponders*

Anyways, new years resolution to write more! (Again... XD) Cheers~.
lanerose: (HxH ~ Smug Killua)
Sooo... these are all things I meant to post yesterday / day before, but between work and a family pumpkin picking potluck upstate, I just hadn't managed yet.

First!

Trail Hunter!
[livejournal.com profile] trail_hunter

It's a new comm for Hunter x Hunter fans a la Hikago's [livejournal.com profile] blind_go and Tenipuri's [livejournal.com profile] subrosa_tennis. On October 10th began sign-ups for its first round. Fics only have to be 500 words, and it should be a lot of fun, so if you're into HxH please consider joining us!!! ♥

And Second!

[livejournal.com profile] blind_go is over! ;_; Which means that I now have to own up to having written Akira no Soccer. I did a concrit of it myself a week after the fact, and it's atrocious, so let's not get into it. XDD

Congrats to [livejournal.com profile] readerofasaph for guessing right~! This means I now owe you Ryoma fic (oh dear), so please let me know if there's anything more specific you'd like in it.

Finall, Third!

Speaking of [livejournal.com profile] blind_go and concrit (hazardous, or so it seems ^^;; ) I did attempt a concrit of every fic written this round, all of which (including the one for my own *lol*) can be found under the following cut. Because clearly, everyone wants my opinion. (AS IF!) If I haven't said anything positive about a story it's not that I didn't like it, it's just that I think positive remarks miss the crit aspect of concrit. I actually made a conscious decision to pull most of my more positive "I like X" remarks, so be warned that this is a try at crit, not commentary. (It is my intention to go around leaving the positive comments on the fics I had them for. XD We'll see if I manage it. XD) These comments are mainly things that could be fixed or changed, with suggestions for those changes when they weren't completely clear, but I am only human, and I don't doubt that I edge a little too close to commentary in some places. Sorry about that. Please let me know if you'd like to discuss, etc.

Blind Go Concrit )
lanerose: (Tutu ~ One of Those Days)
So... not working on fic because I'm lazy like that. XDD For anyone who hasn't seen it, my [livejournal.com profile] fifthmus fic went up last week. It was supposed to be about Akiko meeting Mitsuko, but it wound up being more Akiko gen. You can read it here. ^_^

In related news, saw that sign ups just started for the next round of [livejournal.com profile] blind_go. I... am torn. On the one hand, Blind Go! I had loads of fun last round. And wonderful new mods and fun themes~! Also, I like having deadlines 'cause they mean that I actually write things. On the other hand, I'm already committed to [livejournal.com profile] subrosa_tennis and that last author standing thing for Doctor Who, both of which (assuming I'm still in the latter, which is probably a fault assumption *lol*) should be wrapping up around then. So... thinking about it. Might sign up and then just see how it goes. ::shrug::

Speaking of [livejournal.com profile] subrosa_tennis, I've been toying for a bit with making up a writer's guide to the US Open. So often, I've seen it written wrongly in Prince of Tennis fanfic, and as a proud New Yorker it kind of bothers me when people set it in California, or in Manhatten, or whatever. *Especially* because the actual series got the details *so* correct, right down to the airplanes flying from La Guardia in the background. Also, I'm dying to see Prince of Tennis fic where everyone goes to watch a baseball game because Arthur Ashe (where the finals of the Open are played) is right across the street from Shea Stadium. (Mind you, I'm never going to write it and I know it. But I'd love to see it.) I took a bunch of pictures of how to get to and from the stadium when I went to a Mets game earlier this week, and it occurred to me that this is probably the reason why Ryoma got lost coming out of the Tokyo subway: )

I'm trying to get tickets to go see at least one day of the Open, in which case I'll definitely do the guide with proper pictures and stuff. Maybe not if I don't, though, 'cause, y'know - directions to stadium only guide is kind of lame.

Anyway, might try and work on fic now. Or maybe to update my lists of recs with all of the stuff I've got bookmarked. *lol* But probably writing. Wish me luck~~!!

So, once upon a time, something like a year and a half ago, myself and my two good friends were watching the second season of Kaleido Star. They introduced a character named Leon, who shared a voice actor with Cloud Strife of FFVII / KH fame, and had long silver hair. A wonderful, cracktastic crossover idea was born. And now, it's finally a fic.

In total, I wrote 60 fics in 31 fandoms, for a total wordcount of 45,605 words. O_o Almost a Nano's worth of words. I hadn't realized I'd written that many short fics. I blame Ironman 7. Here, have a new cut for people who just want to see the opinions part.

Wow. It's... very pleasant, to think that I made it seven weeks, producing a fic for five of every seven days. This last week was Author's Choice. I decided that meant that I could reuse whatever fandom I liked, so I've finished the challenge with 10K+ words in 27 or so fandoms. O_o That's kinda cool. I think I'm going to miss this challenge. Not enough to sign up for it again, mind you, but miss it all the same.

Anyway! I have here Princess Tutu, Final Fantasy XII, Hunter x Hunter, Kingdom Hearts II, and Mai-HiME ficlets. Tutu has angsty undertones but is happy. FFXII is comedy. HxH is fluffy. KHII and Mai-HiME are both AU - - KHII is AU with an up-spin, Mai-HiME is AU with a down-spin. At least, that's how their moods classify themselves in my heads, though both are a little angsty. The KHII one is actually an idea I've been meaning to work on for just this side of forever, and have never gotten around to. There may be more of it later, since I like the verse. The HxH one isn't as fully-fleshed as I wanted it to be - a friend had asked me to go see a staging of a play I editted for her, so I didn't have as much time to devote to it as I should have in the first place... and then I forgot until 20 of midnight that I was dog-sitting for my aunt, so I didn't have time to edit much on the back end either. It's actually kinda just this side of flat-out bad. XD The Tutu one, on the other hand, may be my favourite. The FFXII one is good for a laugh, though, and the Mai-HiME one plays out what-if that I'm fond of. Possible elaboration on it, later, but I don't think so. ^.^;;;

And now, fic!
