The Rec List

All right, so this is unfinished, but I figure that A) this coming week is when it will be most useful B) I intended to continue work on it after today anyways and C) if I didn't get this off my hard drive I'd spend all my time looking for and reading through good fics and never get around to writing fics of my own. So...

Jump To Fics
Jump to Archives and Authors
I’ve been a member of a vast number of fandoms over the past five years. From Sailor Moon to Stargate, from Gundam Wing to Lord of the Rings, there aren’t many major fandoms that I haven’t touched at least once. I came to the conclusion, at last, that I needed to make a list of all the fics that I love – the ones that I’ve read a hundred times and would still go back and read again, or the ones in newer fandoms that are simply so brilliant they defy description. This is that list.
In an effort to make it more readable, I’ve divided it into different fandoms, which are then organized by author’s pen name. I debated doing it by pairing or category, but there are several gen fics, and there are authors who write more than one pairing that I’m willing to read, so I decided against it. As far as categories, I tend to prefer drama fics (because they’re the longer ones, and I like long fics), so it seemed an inadequate way to divide the stories. I feel that there are sufficient people like me who simply look for good writing as opposed to any one pairing or category to warrant listing things this way so that people can read other works by the authors they enjoy without having to search the recs or fend for themselves.
Likewise, immediately following this introduction is a general list of all the authors I recommend. These are people whose works simply have such superior quality that I feel anything they’ve written is likely to be brilliant. Since there are some fandoms I’ve failed to incorporate through my own lack of participation therein, I’d recommend you look to their stories. All fandoms in which an author participates are listed in the author’s section. For other authors, I’m afraid you’ll have to search on your own.
Please note that this list, in addition to running the gamut from crack to tragedy, includes both heterosexual and homosexual relationships. Pairings, except where hidden as part of the fic itself, tend to be listed in the summary. Please feel free to Ctrl + F your way to whatever you like best – goodness knows I would! Just remember that the order in which characters are listed in terms of pairings and the spelling of their names here is subject entirely to my whims. Fandom nicknames for pairings (ex. Elricest, 1x2) and situations (ex. Severitus’s Challenge) are also used where I felt like it. ^^;;;;
If you are an author on this list and would like to be removed or have your entry changed, please leave a comment here or email me at roselanrete@yahoo.com and I’ll be glad (well, not glad, but willing, at least) to adjust the list accordingly. Changes cannot and will not include adding other fics to the list unless I genuinely feel they should be added. In some cases, it might be worth it to rec your own fics to me. It's possible that I’ve simply not read everything you’ve written yet, so please let me know what’s available! This applies to all authors, including those not on the list. Similarly, if you know of something that isn’t on this list that isn’t yours but that seems like a glaring omission (or heck, even just that you think I’d enjoy – I’m always looking for new stories!) please feel free to contact me! Just remember - suggestions are wonderful, but badgering is annoying as all get out. Tell me once, and regardless, all is well. ^_^
All judgments and comments listed herein are merely my own thoughts. In some cases, text from the summaries themselves have been used, either because I couldn’t think of something better or because I wanted to incorporate the official summary. Series spoilers do appear in some summaries - I do, however, guarantee no spoilers for the fics themselves. Consider yourselves warned, and read at your own risk. As a final disclaimer, be aware that this is all fanfiction. Neither I, nor the authors of these works, lay any claim to any character used. All such things belong to their respective creators.
Also, as a commenter, I’m somewhat lacking, so I really shouldn’t be the one to throw this out there, but responding to the authors and telling them what you thought is always nice, if occasionally somewhat difficult. I know that I love getting comments back on stories, and I don’t doubt that most other writers are exactly the same way – so if you find a fic and fall in love with it, please comment on it!
This list is about as far from finished as it gets. It just seems like a good week to get it up and going for those friends of mine who, like me, suddenly have the time to read fics and are looking for some good stuff this vacation. I'll be updating more, and I freely admit that someday everything will probably have to be in separate posts because this'll get way too long. Oops. XD I'll worry about it later. ^^;;; Edit: Like today. ^.^;;; All fandoms now have their own posts, with links to all of them in this post. (~Rose, 6/5/06)
Finally, a hundred thousand thanks to Bard_Linn and Ladylore, both of whom contributed to this list by reccing me to different fics over the years.
Happy Reading!

“…but Rose, we hate everything that you’ve recommended! Why don’t you let us find our own fanfics at all the places you’ve been hunting over the years?” … Well, if that’s how you feel, these are the places I do my fanfic hunting. As an added tip for working with some of these sites, a few of them let authors recommend their favourites. If you find an author you like, check their favourites – in general, good writers enjoy well-written stories. There are a few others I'd like to include, but I'm not sure about the proper etiquette for doing so. If you know, please tell me! These are sites that should be obvious to most people at a glance at a fandom, not the smaller ones I've been known to haunt.
Fanfiction.net at http://www.fanfiction.net
Notes: FFN specializes in being a generalist. It’s got everything, no matter how obscure or random, all neatly filed and labeled. The problem with having everything, though, is that the quality is iffy at best. Nicknamed “the Pit”, FFN is home to some of the worst stories the world has ever had the misfortune to see. It does, however, have some real gems – which, in my opinion, makes it all worthwhile.
Haku Baikou at http://hakubaikou.com/
Notes: Haku Baikou specializes in Rurouni Kenshin fics. The archive is relatively small, but by the same token, it’s a treasure trove. This is probably because archiving at HB is by invitation only. It’s also got loads of pretty artwork and some gorgeous desktops. A must-visit for fans of RuroKen.
Iolausian Library at http://www.iolausianlibrary.org/
Notes: IL hosts a multitude of Hercules fanfiction, ranging freely across the different series (Xena included). Some of it I like more, some of it I like less… the library accepts submissions, so quality can be iffy. Nevertheless, I’ve found some real gems here that, to my knowledge, have yet to be posted anywhere else. The search function can be difficult to use, but the codes they have impress the heck outta me. (Where else, I ask, can you search for fics that are hurt/comfort (h/c) or connected to specific episodes or challenges?) Major love for the library.
A Sailor Moon Romance at http://www.moonromance.net
Notes: ASMR has been around for years, and is (although I doubt anyone cares) where I got my introduction to the wonderful world of fanfiction. Back in the day, it housed only Usagi / Mamoru (Serena / Darien) stories, but these days, it takes just about anything – including different fandoms. Like FFN, though, you run into the problem of too many fics making it hard to find the good ones.

Looking for something in a fandom I haven’t covered, or with a pairing I might not read? These are the people whose fics I’ve enjoyed across fandoms. Whatever you’re looking for, if one of these people has written it, then it’s probably awesome.
Henrika, archiving at http://www.fanfiction.net/u/243289/
Fandoms: Digimon, Fullmetal Alchemist, Yu Yu Hakusho
Note: Particularly good at one-shots… so if you’re looking for something less epic than is my style, check her stuff!
Girl_Starfish, archiving at http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/louisew/fanfics.html and http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=girl_starfish
Fandoms: Digimon, DCU, Fruits Basket, Fullmetal Alchemist, Gundam Wing, Pokemon
Note: AUs seem to be her specialty, and damn if they aren’t amazing, but don’t let that turn you aside, because she writes just as well within a fandom as she does outside of one.
Lisa Roquin, archiving at http://www.fanfiction.net/u/364765/ and http://groups.yahoo.com/group/lisascribbles/
Fandoms: Crossovers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Harry Potter, Stargate: SG-1
Note: Loads of crossovers to her name, all of which I’ve enjoyed, but she’s every bit as good in a single fandom as she is at splicing them.
Shimegami-chan, archiving at http://www.fanfiction.net/u/27935/
Fandoms: Card Captor Sakura, Chrono Trigger, Detective Conan / Case Closed, Digimon, Dragon Ball Z, Earthbound, Final Fantasy – IV & V, Fullmetal Alchemist, Gundam Wing, Mario, Mega Man, Rockman.exe, Sailor Moon, Saint Tail, Star Wars, Yami no Matsuei
Note: Shimegami-chan writes mainly one-shot pairing fics. Be sure to check this author’s page if you like Royai or 1x2.
Syl, archiving at http://www.fanfiction.net/u/4565/
Fandoms: Batman, DCU, Hogan’s Heroes, Nightwing, Startrek, Teen Titans, Vertigo
Note: Syl’s Batman and Nightwing fics drag me back for re-reads at least once every few months, which is saying something given how much I tend to steer clear of those fandoms.
Tir Synni, archiving at http://www.livejournal.com/users/tir_synni/48599.html http://www.fanfiction.net/u/66890/, and http://www.geocities.com/relisprince2002/
Fandoms: FFVII, FFIX, Fruits Basket, Fullmetal Alchemist, Inuyasha, Harry Potter, Kingdom Hearts, Naruto, Petshop of Horrors, Rurouni Kenshin, Trigun, Stargate: SG – 1, Yu-Gi-Oh, Zelda
Note: Tir’s another mainly one-shot author, but whether it’s a drabble or an epic, Tir’s work is always worth reading.
Vikki, archiving at http://www.fanfiction.net/~victoriahughes and http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=vikki
Fandoms: Bleach, CCS, D.Gray-man, Death Note, Detective Conan, Eyeshield 21, Fullmetal Alchemist, Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu, Hanakimi, Hellsing, Hunter x Hunter, Magic Kaito, Maruhen Prince, Naruto, Stargate: SG – 1, Tenipure, Tenjou Tenge, Tokyo Babylon, Tsubasa, Revolutionary Girl Utena, xXxholic
Note: Every time I enter a new fandom and start looking around, I almost invariably find tracks that Vikki’s once again not only beaten me there, but also left good fic in her wake. Works out quite well for me, actually. ^.^;;;;
